Dr. Quay Dortch is the Coordinator for the Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal
Blooms (ECOHAB) Program in the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). ECOHAB provides funding for research on the causes and impacts of harmful algal blooms (HABs). Before coming to NOAA she conducted research on HABs, hypoxia and eutrophication in Louisiana coastal waters, especially those influenced by the Mississippi River.
As the ECOHAB Coordinator she manages the ECOHAB GOMTOX project, which was instrumental in the development of a shipboard screening/dockside testing protocol. NMFS has just announced the opening of part of Georges Bank to shellfish harvesting after 22 years of closure, based in part on the availability of the protocol.
